W.O.W. Talk: WEEK 2, DIABETES

We are in Week 2 of the W.O.W. (Women and girls Out Walking) Challenge 2005 – keep up the fantastic walking!

Remember to go to the Participant Log-In section of the W.O.W. website (http://www.womenshealth.wisc.edu/programs/wow6/login1.asp) to log your steps for last week. You’ll get an instant feedback report of your progress!

For those of you who recently registered for the Challenge, it will take approximately 1 week for your pedometer and tracking log to get to you. Thanks for your patience and keep walking! You can always estimate your steps for the days you did not have your pedometer.

FOR WOMEN

“Don’t be afraid if things seem difficult in the beginning.  That’s only the initial impression.  The important thing is not to retreat; you have to master yourself.”  ~~ Olga Korbut, Olympic Gymnast

Tip of the week:  Try parking further away from your home, office, or shopping center to add extra steps to your day.

For Your Health

Diabetes is this week’s health topic.  Diabetes disables the body from producing or properly using the hormone (insulin) needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life.  Sadly, it has become the 6th leading cause of death in the United States.  But, did you know a Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) study showed that people can delay and possibly prevent this disease by losing only a small amount of weight (5 to 7 percent of total body weight)?  Hint…walking can help!  Visit these websites for more information about how to keep your body diabetes-free:

FOR GIRLS

Tip of the week: Try parking further away (if you drive), asking your family to, or walk to a bus stop further from home, school, or the mall to add extra steps to your day.
