Principal Investigator

Gloria Sarto, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Sarto assumed leadership of the UW Madison Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Field Center upon the death of Dr. Catherine (Kit) Allen, Ph.D. in 2003. She is Principal Investigator of WHI in Madison, as well as for a number of Ancillary Studies associated with WHI.

A native of Wisconsin, Dr. Gloria Sarto received both her M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin and was the first female Obstetrics/Gynecology resident at the UW. She has been on the faculties of the University of Wisconsin, Northwestern University and the University of New Mexico, where she served as chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Sarto currently holds several roles at the University of Wisconsin. She is Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, Co-Director of the U.W. National Center of Excellence in Women's Health Research, Director of the National Centers of Excellence Research Coordinating Center, and Scientific Director of the Center for the Study of Cultural Diversity in Healthcare. In addition to her roles at the University, Dr. Sarto is a gynecologist for the Women Veterans Health Program at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital.

Dr. Sarto is involved in national efforts to advance the research agenda in Women's Health. She served on the Board of Health Sciences Policy of the Institute of Medicine and was one of three Health, Safety & Well-being Task Force leaders for Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton's Initiative, Wisconsin Women Equals Prosperity. Currently, Dr. Sarto serves on the Board of Directors for the National Center for Genome Resources.

Dr. Sarto is the recipient of the American Medical Women's Association Distinguished Career Award, the 2001 University of Wisconsin Medical Alumni Award and the 2004 YWCA Woman of Distinction Award. In recognition of her long and prestigious academic career, in October 2003, Dr. Sarto was the first woman to be named President of the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society since its inception over a century ago.

 

Field Center Manager

Sharyn Streicher, RN

Sharyn has been the clinic manager of WHI since 1995. She managed this clinic following the health of approximately 3000 postmenopausal women. She came to WHI with 10 years of clinical research experience. In addition she has ten years experience in Intensive Care.

Ancillary Study Coordinator/Data Coordinator

Vicki Gobel, RD,CD

Vicki was Lead Nutritionist for the WHI Diet Study, a clinical trial looking at the role of diet in preventing breast and cancer, as well as heart disease. In addition to her research experience, Vicki has experience in clinical and community nutrition.

Sherry Lamphear

Sherry has worked with WHI for the past 5 years. Previously, she spent 12 years working in obstetrics and gynecology so she has knowledge and experience in the women's health care arena.


Volunteer

Shirley Winsborough

Shirley has volunteered with WHI since 1996. Shirley is a librarian who retired ten years ago from Oscar Mayer Foods. She is also a participant in the WHI study.
