- A Message from the Director

Welcome Message from the Program Director

Dear Prospective Applicant,

This is an exciting time for women in medicine! Not only has there been growing attention to all aspects of women's health over the past 10-20 years from basic biology to clinical practice to public policy, but many national and professional organizations have praised women's health research as a means of attracting more women into biomedical research careers. This is critically important to the health of the nation and to maintaining a high quality medical workforce. The University of Wisconsin is a national leader in women's health research and women's leadership development. We see the women's health movement in academic medicine as a positive, transformative force in academic medicine.

The goal of our fellowship is to launch physicians on a research career pathway in women's health. As future leaders in academic medicine, we expect our fellows to become excellent researchers, clinicians, and educators. The University of Wisconsin Womens Health Fellowship is part of the UW Center for Women's Health Research. The Center affiliates faculty and staff from the Medical School (7 departments) as well as the Schools of Nursing, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, Social Work, and the College of Letters and Sciences. Most fellows are internists, but psychiatrists, family physicians, and obstetricians/gynecologists are also eligible. Applicants must be board certified or eligible in their discipline. Clinicians interested in re-directing toward research careers are welcome to apply.

The research faculty affiliated with our program come from a variety of fields. Fellows train in the traditional apprenticeship model with their selected research mentor and most obtain a graduate degree or certificate in a clinical research field. This training is complemented through an individualized learning plan with didactic and experiential activities. Between the UW and the Veterans Hospital, we have strong clinical programs in primary care women's health as well as subspecialty areas that integrate with women's health. Opportunities for teaching and learning abound.

If you have any questions, please contact us.

All the best,
